Digital technologies and artificial intelligence – new horizons for businesses

On May 28, a specialized seminar was held in Stara Zagora as part of the COALition project on the topic of “Digital technologies and artificial intelligence – new opportunities for business”, which brought together nearly 30 business representatives, experts, and panelists with experience in applying innovation and artificial intelligence (AI).

The event was organized by SZ REDA as part of its program to boost business capacity through knowledge gained from EU-funded projects. The main objective was to present current trends, the regulatory framework, and practical applications of artificial intelligence, including in the energy sector and the renewable energy sector (RES).

Topics of the discussions

• Development of AI on national, European and international level
• Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 and upcoming business requirements from August 2026.
• Applications of AI in energy – opportunities, risks, and best practices.
• The role of the state to create conditions for AI transformation
• Educational and staffing challenges in the sector.

Bulgaria has a regulatory framework, including the Concept for AI Development until 2030, but there is a lack of clear implementation mechanisms, cross-sectoral coordination, and a roadmap. Businesses face challenges such as high investment costs, the need for expertise, and ensuring data security. AI in energy is a particularly promising area, but it requires cross-sectoral efforts and targeted support. New educational programs, training courses, and closer cooperation between universities, scientific institutions, and industry are needed.

Dialogue between institutions and business – still insufficient

Despite official documents, stated intentions, and structures such as the Interdepartmental Working Group, businesses still feel a lack of effective communication with institutions. The moderator of the event, Slavtcho Neykovunderlined the need for:

• A consistent and well-communicated national AI strategy;
• Incentives for companies investing in AI solutions;
• Continuation of discussion formats and training courses dedicated to the application of AI in specific sectors.
• AI is no longer just a topic for the future—it is the present, requiring proactivity, partnership, and vision. ARIR – Stara Zagora will continue to create platforms for dialogue and support local businesses in their technological transformation.
