The Voice of the People: Stara Zagora Region is thinking about its future
11/04/2025On April 8 2025, the first meeting of the project working groups was held at the Hotel "Efir". GREENSMARTMED with representatives of the agri-food, plastics and mechanical engineering sectors. Emphasis was placed on assistance to businesses and institutions, as well as the opportunity to build local partnerships within and between units in the sectors.
The presentation outlined the main objectives and strategic vision of the initiative, with a focus on its role in supporting green innovation among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector. Particular attention was paid to the importance of the project in strengthening the implementation of smart specialisation (RIS3) and in developing the regional smart specialisation strategy.
The presentation also discussed ways in which GREENSMARTMED promotes the development of regional and trans-regional ecosystems aimed at supporting sustainable value chains and the overall green transition in different industrial sectors.
The role of major groups: Updates and policy recommendations
The potential applications of agro-photovoltaics in Bulgaria were discussed, focusing on their advantages for efficient land use and the potential for dual use - food and energy production. Participants noted that there is limited public understanding and acceptance of innovation, especially in rural and agrarian areas. This calls for wider communication and educational initiatives to promote a culture of innovation.
The discussion touched upon the need for legislative reforms, to facilitate the development of agribusiness and innovation-oriented SMEs. Regulatory changes were recommended to create a more favourable environment for entrepreneurship and innovation
Participants expressed their views on Bulgaria's potential role in the future of green energy in Europe. Emphasis was placed on the need to improve infrastructure, education and offer incentives to promote the green transition.
One of the pressing issues was the difficulty in finding qualified technical staff. The importance of improving vocational education and building stronger links between industry and educational institutions was stressed.
The project GREENSMARTMED continues to create opportunities to engage key stakeholders and support sustainable development in the region, seeking to combine innovation, policy and practical solutions for a green future for the Mediterranean.
